Short Info about Univerity of Nigeria
University of Nigeria, commonly known as UNN, is a federal
university built in the hilly town of Nsukka, Enugu State, Nigeria by
Government of Eastern Region of Nigeria led by Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe in 1955.
It was opened officially in October 7, 1960 by princess Alexander of Kent, representing the Queen of England, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. The motto is “To Restore the Dignity of Man”.
. Its official color is Green and White and its mascot is the “LION”. The students of UNN are nicknamed LIONS and LIONESSESS and graduates are called SUPER LIONS and LIONESSESS, the responds to that is a loud ROAR, they are indeed GREAT. The University of Nigeria has three campuses –Nsukka, Ituku Ozalla and Enugu campus which are all located at Enugu State, Nigeria. The University of Nigeria was the first fully fledged indigenous and autonomous university in the whole of Nigeria and also runs the model of American educational system.
It is also the first land grant university in west Africa and Africa at large also an elite university in the country. Combining all the campuses together the university has 15 faculties and 102 academic departments. It also offers 82 undergraduate programs and 211 postgraduate programmes. The Vice Chancellor of the University is supported by two deputy Vice Chancellor, one for academics and the other for administration. The University has witness the change of Vice Chancellor with the current or incumbent Vice Chancellor, Professor Benjamin Chukwuma Ozumba(2014-present).
The University has produced great and noble Nigerian and contributes to the world; it is indeed a great citadel of learning.
